First Snow in Kashmir: How to Plan Around It

First Snow in Kashmir: How to Plan Around It

There's a particular hush that falls over Kashmir just before the first snow. The poplars go bare, the air turns sharp enough to sting, and then one morning you wake up to a valley gone completely white. If you've ever wanted to time a trip around that exact moment, here's what actually helps.

When does the first snow usually fall?

Kashmir's first meaningful snowfall typically arrives between the last week of November and mid-December, though higher reaches like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and parts of Pahalgam can see their first dusting as early as late October. Srinagar city itself usually waits until December for its first real snow. Weather in the Himalayas doesn't run on a calendar, so treat these as windows, not guarantees, and build a few flexible days into your itinerary rather than chasing an exact date.

Where to be when it happens

Not every part of the valley experiences the first snow the same way, so where you're based matters:

  • Gulmarg β€” the earliest and most reliable snowfall in the region, with the gondola giving access to snow even before the town itself is fully white.
  • Sonamarg β€” quieter, dramatic, and usually snowbound before Srinagar, but roads can close quickly once it starts.
  • Pahalgam β€” a gentler introduction to snow, with meadows and pine forests that turn especially photogenic under a light first fall.
  • Srinagar β€” the most livable base in winter, with houseboats and Dal Lake taking on a completely different, stiller character once the snow settles.

If your trip allows it, staying a night or two in each gives you the best chance of catching the season shift rather than just reading about it after the fact. Our Kashmir Travel Guide has valley-by-valley notes if you're still mapping out a route.

Planning around unpredictable roads

The first snow is beautiful, but it's also the point where mountain roads start closing without much notice. A few practical habits make a real difference:

  • Book Srinagar–Gulmarg and Srinagar–Sonamarg travel with a driver who knows the route, not a fixed-schedule shared cab, since plans may need to shift by a day.
  • Keep your Srinagar stay flexible on either end of a Gulmarg or Sonamarg trip, in case you get snowed in a night longer than planned β€” honestly one of the better problems to have.
  • Fly rather than drive into Srinagar once snow is forecast; the Jammu–Srinagar highway is the first route affected.
  • Check road status the morning of travel rather than the night before. Conditions can change overnight.

What to actually pack

Kashmir's cold is a damp, bone-deep cold, different from dry mountain cold elsewhere. Layering matters more than any single heavy coat:

  • Thermal base layers, a fleece mid-layer, and a windproof/waterproof outer shell
  • Waterproof, insulated boots with good grip β€” pavements and paths turn to ice fast
  • Wool socks, gloves, and a hat that actually covers your ears
  • A lip balm and hand cream you'll actually use, kept somewhere you can reach without digging through a bag

The skin problem no one warns you about

Cold wind, dry indoor heating, and altitude pull moisture out of skin faster than most people expect, especially on a first trip to the region. Cheeks and hands tend to go first, chapping within a day or two if they're not protected early rather than after the damage shows.

Two things are worth packing before you land, not buying once your skin's already cracked: a rich, barrier-repairing face butter for daily use, and a deeper treatment mask for the nights your skin needs more than a moisturizer can give it.

Making it worth the trip

The first snow isn't just a photo opportunity, it's the moment Kashmir's pace changes. Houseboats get quieter, shikara rides get stiller, and the mountains around Pahalgam and Sonamarg go from green-and-brown to genuinely otherworldly. If you're planning a homestay or expedition around this window, a little flexibility in your dates goes further than a tightly packed itinerary.
